Determination of Water-Soluble Arsenic Compounds in Commercial Edible Seaweed by LC-ICPMS

Abstract: This paper reports arsenic speciation in edible seaweed (from the Galician coast, northwestern Spain) produced for human consumption. Chondrus crispus , Porphyra purpurea , Ulva rigida , Laminaria ochroleuca , Laminaria saccharina , and Undaria pinnatifida were analyzed. The study focused on arsenosugars, the most frequently occurring arsenic species in algae. As(III) and As(V) were also determined in aqueous extracts. Total arsenic in the samples was determined by microwave digestion and inductively co… Show more

“…Other studies have found significant levels of iAs in macroalgae, particularly documented in hijiki seaweed ( Sargassum fusiforme ), eg. (Rose et al, 2007) but also across other taxa (Tukai et al, 2002; Llorente-Mirandes et al, 2011; Duncan et al, 2015). Several studies have reported elevated iAs in Laminaria sp.…”

“…Current concentration data for the Netherlands indicate that only Hijiki contains inorganic As (10.3 mg kg -1 ). Also more in general, Hijiki appears to be the seaweed species with the highest inorganic As concentrations (Morita & Shibata 1990;Almela et al 2002;Laparra et al 2003;Almela et al 2006;Rose et al 2007;Llorente-Mirandes et al 2011), while other seaweed species contain mainly organic As species (Morita & Shibata 1990;Shibata et al 1992;Almela et al 2005). In fact, contamination levels of inorganic As in Hijiki investigated in other studies were lower in some cases and higher in others, indicating that, like in rice, the contamination in seaweed is very variable (Rose et al 2007;Nakamura et al 2008;Oguri et al 2014).…”

“…Concentrations of the total As in the shoots of SY (BLT treatment) were determined by NexION 300X ICP-MS (PerkinElmer, USA) (Llorente-Mirandes et al, 2011). Germanium (Ge) was used as an internal standard to calculate the matrix effect of rice plants on As signal.…”
