Colorimetric reaction behavior of 1-(2-quinolylazo)-2,4,5-trihydroxybenzene (QATB) has been established with uranium(VI) under various physicochemical conditions. An addition of dilute solution of uranyl ions to the dimethylformamide (DMF) solution of QATB, resulted to form a brown colored complex which was soluble if 30% DMF concentration was maintained. The brown colored complex absorbing maximum at 560 nm in the pH range 6.5-7.5. Beer's law was valid over concentration range 0.0-14.0 ppm, with molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity of 1.9 x 10 4 L.mol.-1 cm-1 and 0.0125 µg cm 2 , respectively. The molar composition of the complex was 1:2 (M:L) as determined by Job's method of continuous variation. The tolerance limits for interfering ions are discussed. All variables were studied in order to optimize the reaction conditions. The efficiency of the proposed method is shown by the successful determination of traces of uranium in some ores.

A sensitive and selective spectrophotometric method is proposed for the rapid determination of uranium using tris-[2,4,6-(2-hydroxy-4-sulpho-1-naphthylazo)]-s-triazine, trisodium salt (THT). An addition of dilute solution of uranyl ions to the aqueous solution of THT resulted to form a water soluble dark red colored complex absorbing maximum at 540 nm in the pH range 3.8-6.0. Beer's law is valid over concentration range 0.0-6.2 ppm with molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity of 6.1x10 4 L mol-1 cm-1 and 0.0039 µg cm-2 , respectively. The molar composition of the complex is 2:3 (M:L) as determined by Job's method of continuous variations. The tolerance limits for interfering ions have been investigated. All variables have been studied in order to optimize the reaction conditions. The efficiency of the proposed method is shown by the successful determination of traces of uranium in some synthetically made samples of ores.

A simple and highly selective non-extractive spectrophotometric method is presented for the rapid determination of uranium in low grade uranium ores using arsenazo (III). The method is based on the complex formation of uranium (VI) with Arsenazo (III) at pH 2.0 ± 0.1 which showed maximum absorption at 651 nm. Uranium concentration of 10 µg g-1 with a molar absorptivity of 4.45⋅10 4 mol-1 ⋅cm-1 at 296 ± 2 K obeyed Beer's law. Interferences caused by various metallic ions, such as Mn, Fe, Zn, Mo, Cr, Cu, Co, Ni, Zr, Pb, Al and Na were effectively masked by diethylenetriaminepenta-acetic acid (DTPA) and tartaric acid. The proposed technique has been effectively applied to the determination of low levels of uranium in uranium leach liquors. The accuracy of the current method was checked by comparison with the results obtained by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES).
