Determination of trace heavy metals in harvested rainwater used for drinking in Hebron (south West Bank, Palestine) by ICP-MS

Abstract: Rainwater samples harvested for drinking from the west part of Hebron (south of West Bank in Palestine), the largest city in the West Bank, were analyzed for the content of different trace heavy metals (Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, Ag, Cd, Bi, and Pb) by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This study was conducted to determine the water quality of harvested rainwater used for drinking of south West Bank (case study, Hebron area). A total of 44 water samples were collected in November 2012 fro… Show more

“…In Palestine, limited studies have been conducted for detection of heavy metal levels in the polluted rainwater harvested in cisterns. In a study conducted by Malassa et al [20], two remarkable findings were discovered during analysis of different trace heavy metals in 44 rainwater harvesting samples. These samples were collected in the western part of Hebron.…”

“…Each sample was analyzed three times, and the results were expressed as mean ± standard deviation (SD). The relative standard deviation (RSD) of the three results was calculated and found to be less than 5% for all of the samples for all of the elements analyzed in this study, reflecting the precision of the method for the analysis of these trace elements [25]. All of the chemical analyses were carried out at the Aquatic and Aquaculture Research Laboratory and Environmental Research Lab at Al-Quds University in Palestine.…”

“…According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Pb, Cd, As, and Ni are classified as highly toxic to humans. Table 3 Ionic ratios among measured ions Concentrations of these metals can also be found in rainwater, and are emitted to the atmosphere from metal smelters and waste processing plants, but mining and industrial activities also play a significant role in increasing the concentrations of these metals in the environment (Morais et al 2012;Malassa et al 2014;Chubaka et al 2018). High concentrations of heavy metals deposited into common sources of drinking water, such as lakes and streams.…”
