Various investigations were conducted to establish quantification of microelements in iron and steel using ICP-MS with solid-phase extractive separation capable of separating the matrix simply and rapidly as a pretreatment. A "zero-emission type analysis" free from EDTA as a masking agent and buffering agents used for pH adjustment was sought. To do so, an anion-exchange type solid-phase extraction disk was used as the solid-phase extraction agent, along with "skill-free analysis" requiring no cumbersome manipulations, and "quick analysis" for assessment in an extremely short period of time. Results show a target element in a solid-phase disk, whereas the sample solution at separation was maintained at higher than pH 1.8. The pH adjustment was conducted by dilution of the sample solution with about 400 cm 3 of water. The target element held in the solid-phase disk was eluted with 10 cm 3 of 3 kmol/m 3 nitric acid.

This work aimed to combine solid phase extraction (SPE) with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for the determination of multi-elements (Pb, Cd, and Zn) simultaneously. This combination allows the purification of the solution by minimizing matrix effects, the separation of the analytes and a fast determination of multiple elements (Pb, Cd, and Zn) in seconds. A syringe-solid phase extraction (SYRINGE-SPE) method was developed based on adsorption/desorption of metals onto amino-functionalized hollow core mesoporous shell silica spheres (NH 2 -HCMSSs). The separation of NH 2 -HCMSSs from aqueous phase was assessed by capping the syringe with 0.2-mm filter. The results showed that the quantitative recovery of analytes was obtained at pH 6 by elution with 3 M HNO 3 . The developed method is applicable in the presence of different coexisting ions. The limit of detection was 0.021, 0.004, and 0.007 mg L À1 for Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) ions, respectively, whereas the limit of detection of the instrument without combination with the SYRINGE-SPE was 0.699, 0.123, and 0.24 mg L À1 for Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) ions, respectively. The relative standard deviations were 7.4, 6.2, and 5.4% for Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II), respectively. The method was validated using corn bran (8433) certified reference material. To establish a rapid trace-quantification scheme for elements contained in highly purified tungsten, we studied the most suitable conditions for separating the elements using solid-phase-extraction as a pretreatment for inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). We used chemically bonded silica gels belonging to the functional group of benzylsulfonic acid as extracting agent. Tungsten was anionized by adding hydrogen peroxide solution to a sample that had been decomposed with acid. We separated the cation trace impurities that were present in the chemically bonded silica gel of the ion-exchange type. The target elements retained in the chemicals were then eluted using 10 cm 3 of 2 kmol/m 3 nitric acid. Quantities of the obtained target elements were determined using ICP-MS.
