Determination of trace amounts of aluminium by ion chromatography with fluorescence detection

Abstract: A method is described for the determination of aluminium by hig h-performance ion chromatography followed by post-column derivatisation with 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonate and fluorescence detection at 512 nm (excitation at 360 nm). A short (50 mm) low-capacity cation-exchange resin column was used as the analytical column and 0.1 M K2S04, adjusted to pH 3.0, as the eluent. The calibration graph was linear from 5 to 10000 pg 1-1 of aluminium with a detection limit (30) of 1 pg I-'. Typical relative standard d… Show more

“…[134][135][136] This metal is one of those for which fluorescent and colorimetric sensors are available from classical analytical chemistry. [137][138][139] Many emissive and colorimetric molecules based on flavonols, 140 quinoline derivatives, 141,142 anthocyanins and flavilium salts 143 have been tested for aluminium(III) detection.…”

“…A flow rate of 1 ml min 21 was used. The CG2 HPLC column was immersed in a water-bath at 50 °C following the recommendations of Jones et al 18 For ICP-MS detection, the mobile phase was 0.45 m HNO 3 at a flow rate of 0.5 ml min 21 and the column was kept at room temperature.…”

“…The sensitivity (0.2 µg L"1) is comparable to that of a HPLC-spectrophotometric detection system with salicylaldehydebenzoylhydrazone (21) and higher than those with the other azo dyes (22). Most ion chromatographic methods for aluminum so far reported (23)(24)(25) lack the required sensitivity for these measurements. The proposed system is also attractive for routine use because the reagent, DHAB, is commercially available and both the reagent and the stock solution are stable.…”
