Determination of the Volatile Profile of Lemon Peel Oils as Affected by Rootstock

Abstract: Citrus limon (L.) Burm is an important crop that grows between latitudes 30° North and 30° South, the main producers being China, the USA, Mexico, India, Brazil, and Spain. In Spain, lemon grows mainly in Mediterranean areas such as Murcia, Valencia, and Andalucía. The most cultivated varieties are “Fino” and “Verna”. In this study, five varieties of lemon, “Verna”, “Bétera”, “Eureka”, “Fino 49”, and “Fino 95” were evaluated on different rootstocks: three new Forner-Alcaide (“FA13”, “FA5”, “FA517”), Citrus mac… Show more

“…Eugenol was also present in cinnamon essential oil. The percentages of dominant compounds in oils were consistent with previous research studies [ 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ]. Some compounds found at a lower content (menthone, methyl salicylate, linalyl anthranilate, carvacrol, and α-terpineol acetate) in the oil mix were not recorded in any of the five essential oils.…”

“…Several studies also considered the volatile oil of mango fruits, leaves, and peels with results comparable to those of hog plum peel oil. Each of the volatile oils exhibited different chemical constituents that may be attributed to several factors such as ecological and climatic conditions, plant age, and genotypic characteristics [38][39][40][41][42][43]. The esters showed the highest value (27.37%), and hydrocarbons showed the lowest value (4.21%) among the volatile substances in this study.…”

“…Information about the volatile composition, including some terpenoids in vegetable oils can be found in published reports. Aguilar-Hernández et al [60] reported the profile of terpenoids including monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes in lemon peel oil. In this oil around 23 terpenoids have been found, the most relevant being limonene, γ-terpinene, sabinene, α-pinene, β-pinene, α-thujene, terpinolene, α-terpineol, neral, geranial, and trans-αbergamotene.…”
