Determination of the Volatile Composition in Essential Oil of Descurainia sophia (L.) Webb ex Prantl (Flixweed) by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS)

Abstract: Exhaustive hydro-distillation of Descurainia sophia (L.) Webb ex Prantl (flixweed) collected from two different locations (Cangzhou city-Sample 1 and Beijing city-Sample 2) gave in both cases yellowish colored oils in 0.31 and 0.26% yield, respectively. Detailed chemical composition of the essential oils was analyzed by GC and GC/MS, and forty and thirty-eight compounds were identified. The results indicated that the most abundant component of Sample 1 were cis-β-ocimene (20.1%), menthol (11.27%), neoisomenthy… Show more

“…In previous report by Li et al, 8 , the main compounds of essential oil of aerial parts of D. sophia collected from two different region (Cangzhou and Beijing Cities) were (Z)-β-ocimene, menthol, neoisomenthyl acetate and alloaromadendrene. These findings, except for (Z)-ocimene, were different with our investigations.…”

“…Up to now, several phytochemical studies have identified the presence of cardiac glycosides 4 , flavonoids and phenols 5 and nor-lignan 6 in the seeds and coumarins in the aerial parts 7 . There is report on the essential oil analysis of aerial parts of D. sophia 8 and one report on the lipid analysis of D. sophia seeds in the literature 9 . To our knowledge, there are no reports that detail the chemical composition of essential oils from the different parts of D. sophia.…”

“…Previous phytochemical investigations of D. sophia led to the isolation and/or identification of flavonoids, coumarins, some cardiac glycosides, a norlignan and some other phenolic compounds (Chen et al, 1981;Mohamed and Mahrous, 2009;Sun and Li, 2003;Sun et al, 2003Sun et al, , 2004Sun et al, , 2005Sun et al, , 2006Wang et al, 2004). The literature review also revealed that this species contains some lipids, fatty acids, alkanes and sterols (Afsharypuor and Lockwood, 1985;Bekker et al, 2005), while some previous investigations focused on flixseed essential oil (Li et al, 2010;Tavakoli et al, 2012), glucosinolates and their degradation products (Afsharypuor and Lockwood, 1985;Baslas, 1959;Chen and Guan, 2006;Cole, 1976;Daxenbichler et al, 1991;Fahey et al, 2001;Kjaer et al, 1953;Lockwood and Afsharypuor, 1986).…”

“…Prantl, which is commonly known as Nan-Ting-Li-Zi in China, have been used in traditional Chinese medicine to relieve cough, prevent asthma, reduce edema and promote urination (Sun et al, 2005;Li et al, 2010a;Zhou et al, 2015). These seeds can also be used to treat heart failure, pigmentation and some cancers (Sun et al, 2013;Zhang, 2012).…”
