Determination of the Th1, Th2, Th17, and Treg cytokine profile in patients with chronic Chagas heart disease and systemic arterial hypertension

Abstract: Chronic Chagas heart disease (CCHD affects about 30% of patients with chronic Chagas disease (CCD). Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) afflicts about 25% of patients with CCD. The association of CCHD with SAH (CCHD-SAH) predisposes patients to develop chronic heart failure. The role of cytokines in disease progression in patients with CCHD-SAH is unknown. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to evaluate the plasma levels of cytokines expressing the Th1, Th2, Th17 pattern, as well as Treg cytokines, TNF-alp… Show more

“…Simultaneous activation of Th1 and Th2 cells was shown in various renal pathologies [69][70][71] and in a number of other diseases [72][73][74]. Moreover, significantly increased IL-9 might suggest ongoing differentiation of Т-cells into a Th9 population [73].…”

“…In addition, most of the infants transferred for other reasons had an extremely low birth weight and congenital malformations. Since the incidence of CHD in these infants is often higher than that in other infants in hospital, 10 timely tracking these infants’ CHD screening results in other hospitals can better reflect the detection rate of CHD screening in newborns.…”

“…Several studies showed that IL-17A has an important immunomodulatory role in the chronic phase of the disease 8,14,15,41 . IL-17 expression by Th17 cells and B cells were found in patients with cardiac involvement more frequently, compared to asymptomatic patients, correlating with worse cardiac function 14 ; IL-17 exacerbated produce a proinflammatory environment in Chagas severe heart disease 42,43 .…”

“…In response to the infection, IL17-A, induces a rapid proinflammatory cascade of chemokines and cytokines that facilitates the recruitment and activation of neutrophils and monocytes required for the early control of the pathogen by the immune system 12,13 . In the chronic phase of the disease, several studies suggest that the clinical progression of Chagas cardiomyopathy involves the overexpression of IL-17 by Th17 cells and B cells 14,15 . by means of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) that uses recombinant antigen and a commercial indirect hemagglutination test.…”
