A series of the DEM simulations of the outflow of wooden spheres from a flat-bottomed container was reported, considering the maximum diameter to arrest the flow. Numerical simulations of the discharge process were performed, and the micro-mechanics of the discharged particles were described. The effect of the sliding friction coefficient between particles, rolling friction coefficient, and modulus of elasticity of particles on the clogging process was investigated. The results of the simulations of the mass flow rate of spheres have shown a fairly close agreement with the experimental results. The real particles of wood were not perfectly spherical, their properties were anisotropic, and their frictional properties were non-homogenously distributed on the surface. Nevertheless, these deviations from ideal conditions did not produce a considerable discrepancy in the results. No direct relationship between the interparticle friction and the clogging was found; however, a relationship between the stability of the dome formed at flow arrest and the rolling friction was observed. An increase in Young’s modulus of particles by two orders of magnitude did not affect the clogging process, but a slightly higher probability of clogging was found for softer particles.

A new continuous contact force model for contact problems with complex geometries and energy dissipations in multibody systems is presented and discussed in this work. The model is developed according to the Hertz law, and a hysteresis damping force is introduced for modeling the energy dissipation during the contact process. As it is almost impossible to obtain an analytical solution based on the system dynamic equation, an approximate dynamic equation for the collision system is proposed, achieving a good approximation of the system dynamic equation. An approximate function relating the deformation velocity and indentation depth is determined based on the approximate dynamic equation and is utilized to calculate the energy loss due to the damping force. Then, a primary formula of the hysteresis damping parameter is derived by combining energy balance and the law of conservation of linear momentum. The new model is developed by modifying the primary formula through nondimensional analysis. The comparison with published experimental data and the analysis of the simulation data of eight different continuous contact models reveal the capability and high precision of the new model as well as the effect of the geometry of the contacting surfaces on the dynamic system response.

RESUMO No setor da construção civil há um crescente investimento na manutenção e reparo das construções, como por exemplo, as patologias encontradas nos pisos com revestimento cerâmico. Dentre as patologias mais comuns se pode destacar o assentamento inadequado das placas cerâmicas, que são caracterizadas pela perda de aderência de algumas placas a sua base de assentamento (substrato). Devido à probabilidade de acidentes envolvendo os usuários e os elevados custos de reparo, esta é considerada uma importante patologia. Este trabalho tem o objetivo de apresentar uma nova metodologia de ensaio não destrutivo, baseado no desenvolvimento de uma ferramenta fundamentada na resposta cinética e acústica de um protótipo, que ao percutir uma placa cerâmica com perda de aderência produz um som cavo e uma perda significativa de energia, permitindo identificar a ocorrência desta patologia. Utilizou-se seis tipos de pisos cerâmicos assentados em conformidade e em não conformidade com a norma brasileira, e em seguida, houve a determinação dos coeficientes de restituição de cada pisos. Os sons dos impactos nas placas também foram captados por um microfone dinâmico e um captador piezoelétrico e processados por meio do programa Realtime Analyzer, que produz gráficos que relacionam frequência, amplitude, energia sonora e tempo. Os resultados obtidos pelo protótipo foram comparados com outros quatro métodos não normatizados: cabo de madeira, barra roscada, barra de aço e esfera metálica. Concluiu-se que o uso do protótipo desenvolvido é viável para a detecção de patologia de assentamento das placas cerâmicas, revelando ser uma estratégia preventiva e não destrutiva.
