The purpose of this research was to investigate the influence of swine-waste biochar (SB) on the early-age characteristics of cement pastes. Using a water/binder ratio of 0.28, SB modified cement pastes were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), flow, and Vicat setting tests. Notably, SB reduced the flow and initial setting times of SB modified cement pastes. Due to its porous and negatively charged surfaces, capillary water was adsorbed into the pores of the carbonaceous SB and this reduced the flow of the SB modified cement pastes. Furthermore, it is suspected that the reductions in initial setting times may have been because with the addition of water to the dry SB/cement binder mix, chemical reactions between the calcium cations from Portland cement and carboxylate anions from SB resulted in the development of Calcium Polycarboxylate Salts (C-P-S). Improvements in the properties of SB could enhance its applications in rapid-setting and flow-reducing concrete.

The effects of adding Nb 2 O 5 on the physical properties and glass structure of two glass series derived from the 45S5 Bioglass ® have been studied. The multinuclear 29 Si, 31 P, and 23 Na solid-state MAS NMR spectra of the glasses, Raman spectroscopy and the determination of some physical properties have generated insight into the structure of the glasses. The 29 Si MAS NMR spectra suggest that Nb 5+ ions create cross-links between several oxygen sites, breaking Si-O-Si bonds to form a range of polyhedra [Nb(OM) 6 -y (OSi) y ], where 1 ≤ y ≤ 5 and M = Na, Ca, or P. The Raman spectra show that the Nb-O-P bonds would occur in the terminal sites. Adding Nb 2 O 5 significantly increases the density and the stability against devitrification, as indicated by DT(T x -T g ). Bioglass particle dispersions prepared by incorporating up to 1.3 mol% Nb 2 O 5 by replacing P 2 O 5 or up to 1.0 mol% Nb 2 O 5 by replacing SiO 2 in 45S5 Bioglass ® using deionized water or solutions buffered with HEPES showed a significant increase in the pH during the early steps of the reaction, compared using the rate and magnitude during the earliest stages of BG45S5 dissolution.

Objectives: Regardless of the excellent adhesive and biological properties of glass ionomer cements (GICs), their poor mechanical properties and abrasion resistance limit their application to non-load bearing areas. This study aimed to investigate the effect of flax fibres incorporation on surface and mechanical properties of GIC filling materials.Methods: Short chopped flax fibres were randomly incorporated into GIC at 0, 0.5, 1, 2.5, 5 and 25 wt%. Surface hardness, distribution of different phases, stiffness map, phase separation and uniformity of the material were investigated.Results: Addition of flax fibres produced no significant change in Vicker hardness number of GIC. Qualitative imaging using atomic force microscopy showed the presence of a single phase in GIC, while biphasic structure was observed for flax fibres modified GICs (FFMGICs). For all tested formulations, the flax fibres, however, were uniformly distributed and well integrated within the GIC matrix without any visible interfacial separation. Incorporation of flax fibres was associated with a significant increase in surface roughness and stiffness. The roughness values obtained for all tested formulations, however, are far below the threshold values for bacterial adhesion and plaque accumulation. Conclusions:Flax fibres modified GICs could be potentially used in high stress bearing areas.
