Determination of the Preload of Bolts for Structural Health Monitoring of a Multi-Bolted Joint: FEM Approach

Abstract: The reliability and safety of bolted joints is one of the crucial engineering problems during design of mechanical structures. In this paper, finite element method was used to investigate an asymmetrical, seven-bolted joint. The modelling takes into account the phenomenon of friction and the mechanics of contact between the joined elements. The bolts were preloaded using two different approaches: single and multi-pass. The damage of a bolt was simulated by its removal from the model. The conducted research sho… Show more

“…A failure or leak in a process piping system can have a significant impact on a business, disrupting production or causing catastrophic consequences in the event of an explosion, fire, or hazardous fluid spill, especially for piping systems that work under high pressure [15]. One of the traditional ways of avoiding leaks in such piping systems is through adequate pre-tensioning of the multi-bolted connections, by which the pipelines are formed [16,17]. Some of the existing plants might have come across equipment and piping systems that require on-stream inspection without information on the material.…”

“…Grzejda 16 studied the mechanical response of asymmetric multibolt structures under periodically varying loads. Grzejda et al 17 investigated the problem of preload in multi-bolt connections using the finite element method and showed that the number and sequence of tightenings had an effect on the bolt preload. Grzejda et al 18 used experiments and simulations to analyse the mechanical response of multi-bolt joint structures under pressure and shear.…”
