“…As taxas de acumulação de biomassa foram calculadas como sendo a diferença entre o teor de clorofila-a entre dois estádios consecutivos dividida pelo intervalo de tempo considerado em dias (Sládecek & Sládecková 1964). Para análise taxonômica, o material perifítico foi removido das lâminas e fixado em formalina a 4%.…”

“…and Sladeckova (1962) discussed periphyton terminology. Several reviews of methodology are also available (Lund and Talling 1957, Sladeckova 1962, Sladecek and Sladeckova 1964. Current recommended methods for periphyton collection are detailed by Weber (1973).…”

“…He realized that the ash-free dry weight of periphyton was an estimate of net primary production. Sladecek and Sladeckova (1964) reviewed the different methods used for the analysis of production on artificial sub~ strate. The instantaneous biomass accumulation method (Kevern, et al 1966) provided a refinement of production estimates in that only the acceleration phase of periphyton growth is considered.…”

“…Naumann (1915) and Hentschel (1916) were among the first to study Aufwuchs using glass slides to avoid problems associated with natural substrates. In the ensuing years glass slides and other artificial substrates have been used to assess water pollution and study aspects of biomass accumulation in natural stream ecosystems (Butcher, 1932 ;Castenholz, 1960;Sladecek & Sladeckova, 1964 ;King & Ball, 1966;Cattaneo et al, 1975) . To further isolate ecological factors influencing Aufwuchs growth, many workers as well as this study have used experimental stream ecosystems in which selected variables including light, current, temperature, and toxicants may be controlled (McIntire et al, 1964 ;Warren & Davis, 1971 ;McIntire,1975 ;Rodgers, 1977) .…”
