Determination of the narrow read width of thin film magnetic recording heads using an error rate model

Abstract: 425 1 side fringing erased bands of thin film heads are necessary in the determination of the recording track density. These parameters are usually defined and determined by a '747' curve measurement [ 1 J -[2]. The read width, however, can not be directly measured in this procedure. Instead, the read width is often estimated as equal to the physical track width, or as some arbitrary level of a track profile curve [3], or as in the case of [2], the modeling results of a modeled '747' curve. 4 3 5 3
