Determination of the minimal clinically important difference for seven fatigue measures in rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: Objective-To estimate the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of seven measures of fatigue in rheumatoid arthritis.Study Design and Setting-A cross-sectional study design based on inter-individual comparisons was used. Six to eight subjects participated in a single meeting and completed seven fatigue questionnaires (nine sessions were organized and 61 subjects participated). After completion of the questionnaires, the subjects had five one-on-one 10-minute conversations with different people in the … Show more

“…by severity) whereby there are multiple cut-offs indicating when an individual with a pre-test score in one distribution exhibits change that exceeds the cut-off for an adjacent category that is not necessarily the functional population. 186,187 Nevertheless, with overlap, there may still be difficulties in identifying the separate distributions of each group. 188 Minor variants include using Cohen's d to calculate the percentage of non-overlap.…”

“…The patients were asked to rate the perceived severity of their fatigue three times a day before meals (at 0600, 1200 and 1800) during their hospital stay using a numerical rating scale ranging from 0 (none) to 10 (most severe) (13). The mean scores for the three days before (Week 0), during (Week 2) and after therapy (Week 4) were then calculated.…”

“…Goligher et al [10] examined the use of the MFI in a sample of 80 participants with systemic lupus erythematosus by comparing a "total MFI score" to an anchor of a single-item assessment of fatigue on a five-point scale. This research group also used a similar approach amongst a sample of patients with a rheumatoid arthritis [21]. The applicability of these MCID criteria to cancer populations is questionable considering the different treatment options and pathways of disease progression amongst these patient groups.…”
