Determination of the Förster Distance in Polymer Films by Fluorescence Decay for Donor Dyes with a Nonexponential Decay Profile

Abstract: Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) experiments were carried out on three pairs of donor-acceptor dyes in polymer films in which the donor dyes had absorption maxima in the range of 350-450 nm. Two of the donors, a coumarin dye and a naphthalimide dye covalently bound to polystyrene, gave nonexponential decays in the absence of acceptors. The decay profiles could be fitted to a stretched exponential form with a beta value on the order of 0.9. We developed equations for analyzing donor fluorescence in… Show more

“…Sometimes it is useful to characterize the fluorescence decay not only using exponential functions with discrete rate constants but with stretched exponential functions of the type of eq . For example, stretched exponential functions were used for measurements of Förster distance of dyes covalently bound to polymers I(t)=I0 exp[(t/τ)β] (0β1) …”

“…20,21 Fluorescence microscopy of the nanofibers showed that emission color changed from blue to orange with increasing DCM content ( Figure 7). As the DCM/TPP molar ratio increased to 1: 0.02, white emission was observed with CIE coordinates of (0.321, 0.294), close to the coordinates for pure white light (0.333, 0.333).…”

“…Methacrylic acid (MAA) was distilled under reduced pressure prior to use. The naphthalimide dye, 6‐bromo‐2‐(2‐hydroxyethyl)‐benzo[de]‐isoquinoline‐1,3‐dione ( NapD ), was synthesized and purified following reported procedures 35. 36…”
