The adsorption of Cs on a TiO 2 (110) rutile surface was investigated at 130-800 K using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray excited Auger electron spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption, work-function, and band-bending measurements. Below room temperature, the Cs displays a Stranski-Krastanov growth mode, with the completion of a uniform monolayer ͑ML͒ containing (6Ϯ2)ϫ10 14 Cs adatoms per cm 2 , followed by the growth of three-dimensional clusters of Cs that cover only a small fraction of the surface. The Cs in the first ϳ 1 2 ML is very cationic, donating electron density to the TiO 2 . Most of this charge is localized near the topmost atomic layers, with Ti 4ϩ ions being reduced to Ti 3ϩ . This gives rise to a local dipole moment of the adsorbate-substrate complex of ϳ6D at ϳ0.1 ML. However, a small part of the charge transferred to the substrate also goes much deeper into the solid, giving rise to downward band bending of ϳ0.2-0.3 eV. This band bending nearly saturates at ϳ0.05 ML. The local dipole moment of the alkali-metal-substrate complex decreases smoothly with coverage in the first ML, due to dipole-dipole repulsions and their consequent mutual depolarization, similar to transition-metal surfaces. This gives rise to a rapid and smooth decrease in the heat of adsorption with coverage from Ͼ208kJ/mol down to ϳ78kJ/mol.

The Excitation of Polarization Waves in Bound Electronic States

The appearance of broad peaks in the electron energy loss spectra of elements in the first, second, and third long periods of the periodic table is discussed. It is shown that these peaks are similar to peaks which can be calculated by assuming absorption processes appropriate to ionization of bound states in these metals. By comparison with the calculated peaks and with the known optical constants of graphite a mode of excitation in the form of a collective polarization wave in these bound states is proposed. The possibility of deriving the opt,ical constants of materials from their electron energy loss spectra is discussed.Es wird das Auftretcn breiter Maxima in den Elektronenenergieverlustspektren der Elemente der ersten, zweiten und dritten langen Perioden des Periodensystems diskutiert. Wir zeigen, da13 diese Maxima denen ahnlich sind, die man aus der Annahme von Absorptionsprozessen entsprechend der Ionisation von gebundenen Zustanden in diesen Metallen berechnen kann. Durch Vergleiche mit berechneten Maxima und mit den hekannten optinchen Konstanten von Graphit wird ein Anregungsmodus in der Art einer kollektiven Polarisationswelle in diesen gebundenen Zustanden vorgeschlagen. Die Moglichkeit wird diskutiert, die optischen Materialkonstanten aus ihren Elektronenenergieverlustspektren zu erhalten.

The energy distriljution curves of photoelectrons, emitted from compact cesium films by linearly polarized light in oblique incidence, are measured for photon energies between 3.0 and 4.9 eV. s-polarization and p-polnrization give different results: the relative contribution of primary electrons is more prominent for p-polarization than for s-polarization; only for p-polarization a weak maximum occurs 1.2 eV below t,he Ferrni energy.Die Energieverteilung von Photoelektronen, die mit linear polarisiertem, schrag einfallcndem Licht an kornpakten Caesiumschichten ausgelost werden, wird fCir Photonenenergien zwischen 3,O und 4,9 eV sowohl fiir s-als aucli fur p-Polarisation gemessen. Der relative Anteil primilrer Elektronen ist bei p-Licht starker als bei s-Licht. Nur bei p-Polarisation tritt ein schwachcs Zwischenmavimum 1,2 eV unterhelb der Fermienergie anf.
