Nowadays, calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSA) is garnering a large amount of attention worldwide and is being promoted as a sustainable alternative to Portland cement for specific applications. This study aimed to control the heat release of CSA cement paste by choosing the appropriate composition. For this purpose, different calcium sulfoaluminate clinkers with up to 75 wt. % of ye’elimite were synthetized. Then, a reactivity study on the synthesized clinkers was conducted while varying the amount of gypsum added. The heat of hydration was measured by isothermal calorimetry. The influence of the ye’elimite content on the heat release and on the compressive strength was investigated. According to the findings, the amount of ye’elimite in the cement has a direct relationship with the heat release. The heat release as well as the mechanical performance increase with the increase in the ye’elimite content in the CSA cement. An equation allowing the prediction of the total heat release after 24 h is provided. Such data can be of particular interest to consultants aiming at the reduction of thermal cracking in massive concrete.

To accurately simulate the hydration process of cementitious materials, understanding the growth rate of C‐S‐H layers around clinker grains is crucial. Nonetheless, the thickness of the hydrate layer shows substantial variation around individual grains, depending on their surrounding. Consequently, it is not feasible to measure hydrate layers manually in a reliable and reproducible manner. To address this challenge, a software has been developed to statistically determine the C‐S‐H thickness, requiring minimal manual interventions for thresholding and for setting limits like particle size or circularity.This study presents a tool, which automatically identifies suitable clinker grains and and perform statistical measurements of their hydrate layer up to a specimen age of 28 days. The findings reveal a significant increase in the C‐S‐H layer, starting from 0.45 after 1 day and reaching 3.04 after 28 days. However, for older specimens, the measurement of the C‐S‐H layer was not feasible due to limited pore space and clinker grains.

Using waste molecular sieves (MS) instead of sand as water-absorbing fine aggregates in cement-based materials can effectively deal with factory adsorption waste and reduce sand consumption. In this article, the industrial waste molecular sieve is recycled and incorporated into cement-based materials. The effect of the molecular sieve as a hydration internal curing agent on the performance of cement-based materials is studied. A series of experiments are designed to find out the appropriate ratio and to evaluate and analyze the internal curing effect of waste molecular sieves. Compressive strength, flexural strength, and dry shrinkage properties of mortar with different dosages of the molecular sieve are tested. The water release behavior of the molecular sieve in mortar is comprehensively analyzed combined with the desorption test of the molecular sieve. Results show that the compressive and flexural strength increase by 5% and 10%, respectively, and the drying shrinkage decrease by 6% when 10% of sand is replaced by a molecular sieve under the same total water content. The hydration behavior of the sample is characterized by a microcosmic test of paste. Thermogravimetric analysis is used to calculate the content of corresponding hydration products and quantitatively describe the hydration degree of the internal curing paste mixed with MS. Results show that the content of hydration products is improved by the addition of the molecular sieve, which provides a theoretical basis for the enhancement of mortar to a certain extent.
