Determination of the corrosion rate inside historical brass wind instruments – Proof of concept

Abstract: An electrochemical sensor has been tested on brass reference samples and applied on a mouthpiece of a historical brass instrument. Using a phosphate buffer solution pH 7 with 10−2, 10−3 and 10−4 M NaCl, the electrochemical response (open circuit potential, polarisation resistance) of the sensor corresponds to the results obtained in a traditional electrochemical cell. XPS surface analysis has shown that the brass surface composition after 7 min contact with the sensor is not altered when using 10−3 or 10−4 M N… Show more

“…To verify the efficiency of preventive conservation measures and to obtain information on the corrosion state and rate inside the instruments, non-destructive electrochemical techniques were chosen. The goal was achieved using a miniaturized electrochemical cell that could be used outside but especially inside the tuning slides of the artifacts (Elsener et al, 2016b). Firstly, the work (Elsener et al, 2016b) has involved the development of the electrochemical sensor and subsequently its calibration; afterward the sensor has been applied on reference materials and then used on the historical brass musical instruments (Elsener et al, 2016a).…”

Firstly, the work (Elsener et al, 2016b) has involved the development of the electrochemical sensor and subsequently its calibration; afterward the sensor has been applied on reference materials and then used on the historical brass musical instruments (Elsener et al, 2016a). Unfortunately, the surface state inside the tuning slides is unknown and it is difficult to find a technique able to characterize for instance the inside surface of the trumpets.…”

“…Electrochemical techniques, especially Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), provide unique information about the corrosion behavior of metals [1,2,3] and chemical modification during corrosion/passivation events. Other electrochemical tools, such as polarization techniques, provide information on patina stability [4,5,6] without a direct contact with CH surfaces, because polarization is a destructive method (unlike Polarization Resistance (PR), [7,8,9,10,11,12,13]). Although these are useful techniques and complementary to conventional ones, EIS has been delayed in establishing itself in CH fields, mainly due to in situ analysis requirements (assembling small portable devices) and data interpretation because of few general equivalent circuits (necessary for interpreting results).…”
