IntroductionFruit production is an important branch of horticulture, as fruits have been used not only for nutrition but also to meet personal and social needs (Ercisli et al., 2008). Drupe production in countries around the world, including Turkey, has important potential. Turkey ranks 1st in the world in apricot production with annual production at 985,000 t, Italy ranks 2nd with 266,372 t, and Algeria ranks 3rd with 256,890 t. In terms of almond production, the USA ranks 1st with 1,029,655 t, and Turkey ranks 5th with 90,000 t. China ranks 1st in plum production with 6,804,399 t, and Turkey ranks 5th with 291,934 t (Faostat, 2017).Mistletoe (Viscum album L.) is a semiparasitic plant, and it has been known to reduce the quality and yield of fruits in various parts of the world, including Turkey. Three subspecies of Viscum genus, which is categorized under the family Santalaceae of Santalales, are: V. album L., V. album L. sp. abietis (Wiesb.) Abrom., and V. album L. sp. austriacum (Wiesb.) Vollm. This semiparasite is a subtype containing chlorophyll a and b in its leaves and is (Kew, 2019) able to perform photosynthesis, as first reported by Miller (1982). Although it is capable of synthesizing its own glucose, it still requires water and nutrients from the host and generates its own metabolites during photosynthesis. The semiparasite uses the water and organic substances of the host, taken in through its haustorium from the xylem, initially weakening and eventually killing the host. This account presents information on all aspects of the biology of Viscum album L. (Mistletoe) that are relevant to understanding its ecological characteristics and behaviour. The main topics are presented within the standard framework of the Biological Flora of Britain and Ireland: distribution, habitat, communities, responses to biotic factors, responses to environment, structure and physiology, phenology, floral and seed characters, herbivores and disease, history, and conservation. Viscum album is a widespread obligate hemiparasite on a wide range of angiosperm and gymnosperm trees. Once thought to take just water and nutrients from its host via a haustorium, it is now suggested to also take carbon. Heavy infestations can reduce host vitality through prolific water use and carbon removal. Flowers are highly reduced but are primarily pollinated by flies, ants and bees. Seeds are dispersed by birds. Removal of the epicarp is necessary for successful seedling establishment, and seeds have a sticky viscin coat, adhering it to the host bark. Vegetative spread also happens under the bark of its host resulting in densities of >700 Mistletoe plants per host. Viscum album is a lowland species, most frequent in open human‐made habitats extending into woodlands in Europe. It has been widely planted for folklore use centred around Christmas. Despite conservation concerns following removal of Mistletoe‐laden old orchards, the species is thriving and needs control in some areas. Viscotoxins and lectins in leaves and shoots have been widely used in herbal medicine and now potentially in complementary cancer therapy.

The effects of pine mistletoe (Viscum album subsp. austriacum) on the growth of Scots pine and Crimean pine in Turkey

In this study, the effect of pine mistletoe (Viscum album subsp. austriacum) on basal area increment of Crimean pine and Scots pine was investigated. Dendrochronological data were collected from 223 (71 uninfected and 152 infected) Crimean pines and 195 (77 uninfected and 118 infected) Scots pines located in Kastamonu province of Turkey in 2014. Infected sample trees were classified as light, moderate or severe infection levels. Growth trends and basal area increment loses were compared between uninfected and infected trees for the periods of the last 10, 20 and 30 years. In addition, infection status of forest stands was investigated using temporary sample plots; 27 plots in Crimean pine stands and 26 plots in Scots pine. Results demonstrated that basal area increments were negatively affected by pine mistletoe for both species. Mean basal area increment losses of infected trees for the last decade were determined as 24% for Scots pine and 26% for Crimean pine. Basal area increment losses varied by infection levels (light, moderate and severe) as follows: 25%, 20% and 28% for Scots pines and 20%, 32% and 9% for Crimean pines. Scots pine stands were more severely infected by pine mistletoe than Crimean pine stands. There were negative correlations between number of infected trees and stand density for both species, while positive correlation was detected between the number of infected trees and mean diameter for Scots pine. The results of this study indicate that the pine mistletoe infection has negative effect on radial growth of Scots pine and Crimean pine trees. The results can be an important contribution to the forest management and protection activities in mistletoe‐infected stands.
