Determination of the Broadband Aerosol Optical Depth Baseline and comparison with sunphotometer data

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The Broadband Aerosol Optical Depth (BAOD) was calculated for Camagüey Actinometrical Station (EAC) using the methodology described by Gueymard in 1998. The main source of data used was the Solar Radiation Database of EAC for the 1981-2013 period. The BAOD calculation was performed for observations with total cloud coverage equal or less than one tenth of sky covered by clouds (Clear Sky, HCD) and for actinometrical observations with no clouds in the line of sight of the sun. To determine the BAOD Bas… Show more

“…In particular, the distinctive rainy season signatures in the Caribbean are largely explained by the activation of African dust emissions, along with the predominance of trade winds and associated easterly waves in summer induced by seasonal changes in the configuration and position of the subtropical anticyclone. We note here that Camagüey shows a secondary peak of AOD440 during the dry season, in agreement with previous studies (García et al, 2015).…”

“…For a detailed description of the derivation of Eq. (2) and the parameterisation of the variables, see Gueymard (1998), Fonte and Antuña (2011) and García et al (2015) for the method's application to our data. In order to avoid cloud contamination in BAOD retrieval, we used only DNI observations with the cloud-free condition in the line of sight to the sun.…”

“…For Camagüey, we calculated the monthly mean PW values from the sun photometer PW observations from 2008 to 2014 (García et al, 2015). For each of the three other stations, we calculated the monthly mean PW values using the vertical integrated water vapour (kg m −2 ) from spatially coincident ERA-Interim reanalysis between 1979 and 2013 (Barja et al, 2015).…”
