Determination of tannic acid in industrial wastewater based on chemiluminescence system of KIO4–H2O2–Tween40

Abstract: The oxidation reaction of H₂O₂ with KIO₄ can produce chemiluminescence (CL) in the presence of the surfactant Tween40 and the CL intensity of the CL system KIO₄-H₂O₂-Tween40 can be strikingly enhanced after injection of tannic acid. On this basis, a flow injection method with CL detection was established for the determination of tannic acid. The method is simple, rapid and effective to determine tannic acid in the range of 7.0 × 10(-9) to 1.0 × 10(-5) mol/L with a determination limit of 2.3 × 10(-9) mol/L. The… Show more

“…According to Fig. 2, when the pH of the KIO 4 solution was in the range of 4.0-9.0, CL intensity reached a maximum and remained fairly constant, then decreases at higher pH; this is in approximate agreement with the results of Xie et al for the CL system of KIO 4 -H 2 O 2 -Tween 40 (17). Therefore, KIO 4 was prepared with double-distilled water to increase the convenience of the experiment and the sensitivity of the CL analysis.…”

“…Nevertheless, the light absorption of the mixed system was not equal to the sum of the light absorption of the two individual systems, which implied that citrate might be involved in the cerium(IV)-Tween 85-organic compound reaction system. Based on the above discussion, Tween 85, organic compounds and citrate were oxidized by cerium(IV) in sulfuric acid medium, which emitted a characteristic radiation corresponding to the peak at 478 nm (30,(41)(42)(43). We presumed that when phenolic compounds, such as salicylic acid or 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, were injected into the system, they would be partially converted to quinone, which could be the reason why enhancing peaks appear simultaneously in CL kinetic curves for some phenolic acids.…”

“…3 insert). In the alkaline luminol-sodium periodate-chloramphenicol system the iodide [IO 4 or IO 3 -(product of reduced IO 4 -)] reacts with the unknown complex • to produce unknown complex*, which transfers its energy to 3-aminophthalate ion (a strongly fluorescent compound) and produces the OTSCL emission (steps 6, 8 and 9). Meanwhile, IO 4 or IO 3 can also catalyse the slower translation of two unknown complex • radicals to unknown complex* (step 7).…”

“…Chemiluminescence (CL) has been widely used for analysis due to its high sensitivity, wide dynamic range and simple instrumentation (1). It has been exploited with a wide range of applications in different fields, such as biotechnology, pharmacology, molecular biology and environmental chemistry (2)(3)(4). Luminol is one of the most popular CL reagents because of its excellent CL characteristics.…”
