Determination of Solubility Parameters of Ionic Liquids and Ionic Liquid/Solvent Mixtures from Intrinsic Viscosity

Abstract: The total and partial solubility parameters (dispersion, polar and hydrogen-bonding solubility parameters) of ten ionic liquids were determined. Intrinsic viscosity approaches were used that encompassed a one-dimensional method (1D-Method), and two different three-dimensional methods (3D-Method1 and 3D-Method2). The effect of solvent type, the dimethylacetamide (DMA) fraction in the ionic liquid, and dissolution temperature on solubility parameters were also investigated. For all types of effect, both the 1D-M… Show more

“…A commonly used set of equations to compute the SPs of a polymer in terms of intrinsic viscosity is, δitalicj, polymer=δitalicj, italici[]ηiitalicηi where δ j , i is the corresponding SP of the i th solvent ( j = D, P, or H) and [ η ] i is the intrinsic viscosity of the polymer in the i th solvent. Thus, it is reasonable to compare the SPs obtained using eq.…”

“…So, although viscosity does not permit a direct measurement of the solubility of the polymer, the viscosity of the polymer solutions does provide a way to assess the relative affinity of a polymer in a set of organic solvents. Indeed, the application of intrinsic viscosity measurements to compute the SPs of polymers, epoxy, and alkyd resins, and ionic liquids has been previously reported in the literature . In general, however, these studies used the conventional methods for calculating parameters.…”

“…We propose to interpret the results by postulating that the polarity of an IL is important for the efficiency of the IL to disrupt ionic aggregates of ionomers in THF. Here, the Hildebrand solubility parameter (or cohesive energy) may be used qualitatively to discuss the polarity of ILs, since a higher value of solubility parameter generally indicates greater solvent polarity, although solubility parameters are known for only small number of ILs and solubility parameters cannot be quantitatively used for explaining the behavior of ILs …”
