“…In many instances, alloys containing low silicon (0.01 to 1.0%) are analyzed by using these techniques with a large sample size (3.0 to 10.0 grams). A few of the serious disadvantages of these procedures include the following (4) precipitation is rarely complete, even when two dehydrations are made; boron causes high results by partial coprecipitation wfith Si02 because it is weighed with the silicon dioxide and volatilized as BF3; and niobium, tantalum, and tungsten are largely precipitated with silicon. These disadvantages do not include, of course, the tremendous amount of the analyst's time involved for decomposition of the sample and a minimum of two dehydrations, nor the possible error encountered in filtrations, evaporations, and volatilization of the Si02 with HF.…”
