Determination of sialic acid in saliva by means of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy as a marker in adnexal mass patients: ovarian cancer vs benign cases

Abstract: BackgroundTo demonstrate the use of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to determine sialic acid (SA) levels in saliva using silver nanoparticles as substrates, in adnexal mass patients scheduled for surgical intervention to remove invasive masses, with the aim to compare SA levels in benign tumor vs ovarian cancer patients.MethodsQuantification of SA levels was accomplished by measuring their SERS and calibrating with analytical reagent SA. The mean SA concentration in saliva from 37 benign adnexal mas… Show more

“…In addition, the size effect has more impact below n = 20 as the sensitivity and specificity values were very random, although the essential statistical parameters were considered in the evaluation for clinical utility. Consequently, other vs. studies using saliva, were not included in this review, due to a number of patients less than 20 per group, and concerning other diseases, such as burning mouth syndrome [ 41 ], asthma [ 42 ], Alzheimer’s disease [ 43 ], chronic renal failure [ 44 ], ovarian cancer [ 45 ], various infections, e.g., influenza [ 46 ] or pseudomonas [ 47 ], and cystic fibrosis [ 48 ]. Therefore, out of the 267 studies, only 18 satisfied the criteria according to the PRISMA guidelines.…”

“…The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to assess normality, and a Bonferroni and Tukey multiple comparison tests were used to compare the three groups. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted to calculate the area under the curve and establish the threshold SA level that provides optimized values for sensitivity and specificity (Zermeño-Nava et al, 2018). The values of age and oral parameters for the three study groups are expressed as mean and corresponding standard deviations (SD), summarized in Table 1. Before starting the study, the clinical examiner was supervised in the diagnosis of periodontitis by an expert.…”
