Plasticizers belong to hormone-like substances existing widely in the environment. According to the Environmental Protection Agency of China, they are considered to be the fourth class of toxic chemicals due to their harmful effects on normal endocrine system in human bodies. In the recent published work of our lab, Lactobacillus plantarum CGMCC18980 (strain P1) could reduce the toxicity of di-butyl phthalate (DBP) in rats effectively. The purpose of this study is to further explore the adsorption mechanism of di-butyl phthalate to L. plantarum CGMCC18980, based on optimizing the adsorption conditions. As a consequence, the adsorption effect of L. plantarum CGMCC18980 attributed to relationships between exopolysaccharide, membrane protein, and the cell wall. Experimental results demonstrated that exopolysaccharide and the cell wall were devoted to DBP binding. An obvious adsorption layer was observed outside of L. plantarum CGMCC18980 through scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results showed that the functional groups involved in adsorption were mainly C=O, C-N, and C-O, which related to lipids and polysaccharides. Zeta potential analysis indicated that DBP adsorption had no significant relationship with surface charge. These results revealed that exopolysaccharide may be the key factor of strain CGMCC18980 in DBP adsorption. Key points • Lactobacillus plantarum CGMCC18980 has the ability to adsorb di-butyl phthalate, reaching to 58.63%. • Exopolysaccharide is considered to play a key role in adsorption process. • Membrane protein, cell wall, and surface charge do not contribute to adsorption.

Mycotoxins are toxic compounds mainly produced by fungi of the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium and Fusarium. They are present, often as mixtures, in many feed and food commodities including cereals, fruits and vegetables. Their ubiquitous presence represents a major challenge to the health and well being of humans and animals. Hundreds of compounds are listed as possible mycotoxins occurring in raw and processed materials destined for human food and animal feed. In this study, mycotoxins of major toxicological relevance to humans and target animal species were investigated in a range of crops of interest (and their derived products). Extensive Literature Searches (ELSs) were undertaken for data collection on: (i) ecology and interaction with host plants of mycotoxin producing fungi, mycotoxin production, recent developments in mitigation actions of mycotoxins in crop chains (maize, small grains, rice, sorghum, grapes, spices and nuts), (ii) analytical methods for native, modified and co-occurring mycotoxins (iii) toxicity, toxicokinetics, toxicodynamics and biomarkers relevant to humans and animals (poultry, suidae (pig, wild boar), bovidae (sheep, goat, cow, buffalo), rodents (rats, mice) and others (horses, dogs), (iv) modelling approaches and key reference values for exposure, hazard and risk modelling. Comprehensive databases were created using EFSA templates and were stored in the MYCHIF platform. A range of approaches were implemented to explore the modelling of external and internal exposure as well as dose-response of mycotoxins in chicken and pigs. In vitro toxicokinetic and in vivo toxicity databases were exploited, both for single compounds and mixtures. However, large data gaps were identified particularly with regards to absence of common statistical and study designs within the literature and constitute an obstacle for the harmonisation of internal exposure and dose-response modelling. Applying post-harvest control measures such as adding mycotoxin detoxifying agents is a frequently-used mitigation strategy for mycotoxins. EFSA states that the efficacy of these detoxifiers needs to be tested using specific biomarkers for exposure. However, the proposed biomarkers for exposure are not further optimized for specific target species. Hence, the goal of this study was a) to evaluate the most suitable biomarkers for deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEN) in porcine plasma, urine and feces; and DON, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and ochratoxin A (OTA) in plasma and excreta of broiler chickens and b) to determine the efficacy of a candidate detoxifier, as a proof-of-concept study. Therefore, a mixture of mycotoxins was administered as a single oral bolus with or without detoxifying agent. In accordance with literature AFB1, OTA, and DON-sulphate (DON-S) proved optimal biomarkers in broilers plasma and excreta whereas, in pigs DON-glucuronide (DON-GlcA) and ZEN-glucuronide (ZEN-GlcA) proved the optimal biomarkers in plasma, DON and ZEN-GlcA in urine and, ZEN in feces. A statistically significant reduction was seen between control and treatment group for both AFB1 and DON in broiler plasma, under administration of the mycotoxin blend and detoxifier dose studied suggesting thus, beneficial bioactivity.
