“…The mean selenium serum level in controls (73.2± 9.9 µg/L) was similar to that reported by Navarro et al 27 in Spain (74.90 µg/L); when compared with those shown in table I, it is among the lowest levels, above only those reported in Finland and New Zealand, regions with seleniumpoor soils. Despite the report by Inoko et al 33 of a case of cardiomyopathy related to the selenium serum level of 62 µg/L, the most frequently reported levels in the literature are below 50 µg/L 11,13,15 .…”

“…The sera in which selenium and copper were measured were stored in a refrigerator. The serum levels of the micronutrients were obtained by hydride generation and flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, respectively according to the methodologies of Navarro et al 27 and Terrés-Martos et al 28 . The accuracy and precision of the method were tested with 2 sera with internationally recognized standardized selenium and copper concentrations as follows: 1) Contox trace metal serum control -Kaulson Laboratory, Inc., NJ, USA; 2) Seronorm trace elements serum, produced by SERO AS, Billingstad, Norway.…”

“…130 healthy subjects from the same area [15] and 93 institutionalized elderly subjects from the city of Granada [16] were employed as control group. Additionally, another sample group of 33 urine samples only from patients with AMI from the same area was employed: 14 women (65.4 B 11.9 years; age range: 55-83) and 19 men (65.3 B 8.5 years; age range: 42-85).…”

“…Serum and urine selenium were determined by the corresponding hybride generation atomic absorption spectrometry technique previously optimized [15,17]. A Perkin-Elmer 1100B atomic absorption spectrometer equipped with a hydride generation system PerkinElmer MHS-10 and a hollow cathode lamp for Se operated at 11 mA intensity, was employed.…”
