Determination of roadside noise reduction effectiveness of Pinus sylvestris L. and Populus nigra L. in Erzurum, Turkey

Abstract: This study was carried out to determine the noise-reduction effectiveness of the Pinus sylvestris L. and Populus nigra L. trees along the E-80 State highway in Erzurum-Turkey. Noise values were taken at three measurement points; open (without trees and taken as control), the urban forests of pure P. sylvestris L. and P. nigra L. areas, and at four different distances; 0 (near the noise source), 25, 50 and 75 m from the noise source. At the distance of 25 m from the source, the noise value was 78.5 dB(A) in the… Show more

“…Urban greening can mitigate the urban heat island (UHI) effect and improve thermal comfort by moderating micro-climatic conditions (Avissar, 1996;McPherson, 1992;Park et al, 2012;ShashuaBar et al, 2009;Taha, 1997) and provide shading (Dimoudi and Nikolopoulou, 2003;Ali-Toudert and Mayer, 2007;Shahidan et al, 2012). It can bring other benefits including the ability to attenuate noise levels (Ozer et al, 2008;Islam et al, 2012;Van Renterghem et al, 2012), improve air quality (Akbari et al, 2001;Jim and Chen, 2008;Nowak et al, 2006) and reduce urban storm water runoff (Bartens et al, 2008;Armson et al, 2012).…”

“…Such a container wall can reduce the average noise level in the neighbourhood by 8-10 dB. In addition, the municipality can create some greenbelts around the terminal which can lead to an additional noise reduction of 5 dB(A) on the average [58].…”
