Determination of Risk Factors Associated with Foot and Mouth Disease Outbreaks in Dairy Farms in Chiang Mai Province, Northern Thailand

Abstract: Simple Summary: One hundred and 40 dairy farms that experienced foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks and 307 farms without FMD outbreaks were investigated in this research study. Relevant farm owners were interviewed in order to determine the farm-level risk factors associated with the FMD outbreaks. We established that the risk factors for FMD outbreaks were (1) purchasing a new cow without following quarantine protocol, (2) FMD vaccination administration by non-official livestock personnel, (3) farms locat… Show more

“…In recent decades, FMD studies have been focused on the specific outbreak characteristics and patterns [ 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 ], risk factors [ 32 , 34 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 ], risk assessment [ 44 , 45 ], knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) surveys [ 46 , 47 ], network analysis [ 41 ], spatiotemporal analysis [ 20 , 40 ], spatial analysis [ 48 ], vaccines [ 28 ], diagnostic technique development [ 49 , 50 ], serological analysis [ 30 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 ], and the relevant control measures [ 24 , 25 , 55 ].…”

“…Vaccinations are the primary preventive measure in protecting cattle against FMD. While vaccinations are typically conducted 2 to 3 times a year, FMD outbreaks still occur in areas where vaccinations have been administered [ 39 ]. The following practices could be a possible reason for unsuccessful vaccination programs.…”

“…, 10 represent the parameters to be estimated, constant C is the drift term, and ε it is the random term. Several studies have discussed the risk factors associated with the prevalence of animal diseases, such as farm management practices (18), forest (19), soil water content (20), and water source (21). Evidence suggests that the spread of epidemic diseases is closely related to environmental factors, humans, and animals (22).…”
