Determination of radium isotope ratios and abundances in geological samples by thermal ionization mass spectrometry

Abstract: We describe chemical separation and mass spectrometric procedures for the measurement of radium isotopes in geologic samples. These methods provide 226Ra/228Ra ratio measurements for 1 g or less of rock sample containing subpicogram amounts of radium with precision better than 1.5% (95% confidence level). Radium-226 concentrations were measured by isotope dilution for smaller sample sizes (100-500 mg) containing as little as 1-10 fg of total 226Ra with similar high precision.

“…(7) gives, respectively by the radium isotopes may serve to internally test and validate the model. As mass-spectrometric analyses of 226 Ra and 228 Ra (Volpe et al, 1991, Foster et al, 2004 and delay-coincidence counting of 224 Ra and 223 Ra (e.g., Moore and Arnold, 1996) in small-volume fluid samples continue to advance, such tests are feasible.…”

“…greater precision, smaller sample size and much faster determination Volpe et al, 1991). This new technique allowed to use 226 Ra as a tracer and/or chronometer for: i) recent magmatic processes (Volpe and Goldstein, 1993;ClaudeIvanaj et al, 1998;, ii) Holocene studies Staubwasser et al, submitted), iii) river, groundwater and hydrothermal systems Vigier et al, 2001) and iv) océanographie studies .…”

However, the determination of 226 Ra by TIMS requires the separation of a very high purity Ra fraction, because the presence of trace of elements such as Ca and Ba tends to inhibit the ionization of radium Volpe et al, 1991;. Usually, Ra extraction and purification have been performed in two distinct steps.…”
