Determination of Positions of Zeolitic Calcium Atoms and Water Molecules in Hydrothermally Formed Aluminum‐Substiqtuted Tobermorite‐1.1nm Using Synchrotron Radiation Powder Diffraction Data

Abstract: The crystal structure of hydrothermally formed Al-substituted tobermorite-1.1nm (Ca 4.9 Si 5.5 Al 0.5 O 16.3 (OH) 0.7 ⅐5H 2 O) has been analyzed using synchrotron radiation powder diffraction data. Crystallographic positions of a zeolitic Ca atom and three water molecules in the channel of the framework were determined by the Monte Carlo method and subsequent Rietveld refinement. The Ca atom splits into two sites at a distance of 0.161 nm apart, and it is coordinated with the three water molecules and the thre… Show more

“…Both in natural and in synthetic compounds, silicon may be partly substituted by aluminum [up to Al:(Al+Si) = 0.13-0.14, according to Sakiyama et al (2000)], a substitution which may be balanced by a higher Ca content and/or higher O 2 by OH substitution. That has been confi rmed by the structural study carried on a synthetic specimen of tobermorite 11 Å of composition near to Ca 5 Si 5.5 Al 0.5 O 16 (OH)·5H 2 O, through Rietveld refi nement of synchrotron radiation powder diffraction data (Yamazaki and Toraya 2001). 9 Å phases: "clinotobermorite 9 Å" and riversideite "Clinotobermorite 9 Å" and riversideite, are obtained by heating, at 300°C, clinotobermorite and tobermorite 11 Å, respectively.…”

“…A 638-642 band corresponds to SB of Q 3 (0Al) (Kirkpatrick et al 1997) and Q 3 (1Al). The SB and SS Q 3 bands indicate linkages across the (002) interlayer, which contains channels for water molecules and exchangeable alkali cations (Tsuji and Komarneni 1989;Yamazaki and Toraya 2001). A ~840-900 shoulder indicates SS of Q 1 (0Al) sites .…”
