Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Marine, Brackish, and River Sediments by HPLC, Following Ultrasonic Extraction

Abstract: In this paper sixteen Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are estimated in sediments in five locations along Diyala River where entering Baghdad city until flows into Tigris River, (PAHs) are organic compounds that contain two or more fused rings. Some of these compounds are classified as carcinogenic and mutagenic pollutants. Soxhlet technique is used in this work to extract PAHs from sediment samples with using methylene chloride as extraction solvent. High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with U… Show more

“…Naphthalene was extracted from 5 g of wet sediment using acetone and solid‐phase extraction (SPE) in C 18 resin, as described previously (Sarrazin et al ., 2006). High‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses were performed with an Elite EZLaChrom LC (Hitachi) coupled with a fluorescence detector L 2485 (Hitachi).…”

“…Separation of the naphthalene was performed at 21°C on a C 18 column (3 µm, 3.9 × 150 mm, Waters) connected to a pre‐column (20 × 4 mm) containing a similar coating. The elution profile, flow rate and fluorescence detection conditions were those previously described for the 16 EPA PAHs (Sarrazin et al ., 2006). The determination of recovery yields was performed by adding a definite quantity (100 µg kg −1 ) of naphthalene to three replicates of uncontaminated sediment.…”

“…The elution was made with a linear gradient that started from 65% acetonitrile in water to 100% acetonitrile over a period of 25 min. Data acquisition and processing were achieved during 40 min with Empower 2 chromatography data system software (Waters) [Sarrazin et al, 2006]. All the solvents were prefiltered on 0. solution.…”

“…A preliminary step of purification and concentration of sediment samples was necessary before high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. The sample preparation technique was a procedure developed by Sarrazin et al (2006) All the solvents used were of HPLC grade. A 20‐mL volume of acetone was added with 2 g of dry sediment in a flask.…”
