Determination of polyacrylamides by maximum suppression

Abstract: . Can. J. Chem. 65, 557 (1987). The use of polarographic maximum suppression methods for determining polyacrylamides and polyacrylic acid-based polymers was investigated. Using the oxygen, co2+, and H~~+ maxima these polymers were determined at the low ppm level. The effectiveness of polymers as maximum suppressors was dependent on the charge of the polymer and that of the electrode at the potential at which the polarographic wave occurred. The maximum suppression of various binary mixtures of polyacrylamides … Show more

“…However, most interferences, including humic acid, can be removed by the various chromatographic processes we developed for cleaning up pam solutions prior to determining concentrations. The procedures are fairly quick and typical interferences and appropriate removal procedures have been described in detail in previous papers (4,5).…”

“…We recently reported the determination of several polyacrylarnide-based polymers by polarographic maximum suppression in mercury (11) solutions (1). The main disadvantage of this method is that it is non-specific; it cannot be used to analyse one pam in the presence of other pams, or in the presence of other types of surfactant.…”

“…The literature reports several techniques for quantifying and characterizing polyacrylamide in solution; among these are the total organic carbon method,10,11 titration complexation,12,13 fluorescence spectrometry,14,15 hydrolysis of amide groups with the detection of ammonia,16,17 colloidal titration,18,19 turbidimetry;20,21 viscometric method,22,23 polarography,24,25 the method of flocculation in alkaline solution,26 radioactive labeling,27,28 size exclusion chromatography,29 and light scattering 30. However, only some of these methods are suitable for determining the critical overlap concentration ( C* ).…”
