Determination of pollutant concentrations in the Krasny Brod River profile based on the Buckingham theorem

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThe paper deals with an application of the model which determines concentrations of pollutants in a water stream and which is developed based on dimensional analysis. The most important part is the selection of appropriate variables for model development. The use of dimensional analysis, the Buckingham theorem, for water quality modeling is a new approach. This method could be used for prediction of any pollutant in a water stream. The obtained results demonstrate that dimensional analysis and u… Show more

“…In addition to typical procedures aimed at maintaining or improving the good technical condition of networks and facilities [4], and at ensuring channel self-cleaning [5], a number of measures should be considered. These include the following: reduction of the stormwater runoff to the receiving surface water bodies [6], delay of stormwater runoff from the catchment area [7], reduction of stormwater pollution [8], prevention of the adverse effects occurring in stormwater receivers [9], restoration of ecosystems to their pristine state [10], and protection against floods and drought [11], as well as ensuring the economic efficiency of drainage investments [12].…”

“…As the research cited below and some of the experiences and research from neighbouring countries shows, rainwater management can also bring unexpected effects and impact the landscape or the quality of surface waters [9,10]. There is, therefore, an ever-increasing need to find the most efficient ways to manage water in the landscape.…”

“…Trends in nutrient concentrations in recent years have been identified in Swedish farmland rivers [2], Latvian rivers [3], and Slovakian rivers [4][5][6]. Several mathematical and numerical models have been developed to simulate water quality in river basins and pollutant spreading in streams; ZNEC [7], MODI [8], and a model based on dimensional analysis [9][10][11] as well as water quality indexes [12,13].…”
