Determination of photosensitizer concentration in biological tissues from diffuse reflectance and fluorescence

Abstract: We present a fiber-optic device for noninvasive determination of the optical properties of biological tissues and photosensitizer concentration. The device developed can be used in two modes: the mode for detection of the spatial distribution of diffuse reflectance, and the fluorescence mode. We tested the device in vitro on specimens simulating tissue and on whole blood, and also in vivo on rats. We have shown that with additional modification and adaptation, the device can be used for in vivo monitoring of p… Show more

“…Various spectroscopic techniques have been used and most frequent are low-angle fluorescence [11] , low-angle static [12] and dynamic [13] light scattering, and attenuated total reflection techniques [11,14,15] . Still, these methods have limitations (i) due to sophisticated methodology; (ii) spectral interfering effects like reabsorption; or (iii) related to the limited number of detectable substances (like luminophores or Mie-scattering entities).…”

“…Fluorescence spectroscopy (either in the point-monitoring or imaging mode) can also be used as a tool for PS concentration measurements. 4,[12][13][14][15] No tissue excision would be required in contrast to HPLC. Thus, it may constitute a tool for minimally invasive quantification studies providing in vivo capabilities.…”

“…A limitação da tomografia fotoacústica está na dependência de transdutores fotoacústicos de banda ultralarga, e na velocidade de detecção dos transdutores. Já o uso de refletância difusa está relacionado com várias aplicações em TFD para monitoramento de propriedades ópticas com diversas aplicações [46][47][48][70][71][72] , muitas vezes conjugadas com técnicas de fluorescência ou com métodos numéricos, como Monte Carlo…”
