Determination of Phenolalkylamines, Narcotic Analgesics, and Beta-Blockers by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: An analytical procedure for determination of phenolalkylamines, narcotic analgesics, and beta-blockers in urine by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is described. The detection of phenolalkylamines, narcotic analgesics, and beta-blockers is based on acid hydrolysis, liquid-liquid extraction, and selective derivatization. For screening of phenolalkylamines the m/e 179 and 267 ions were monitored by GC/MS. With narcotic analgesics, the extracted ion corresponded to the molecular ion (M+) of the drug a… Show more

“…18,19 In this study, the derivatization of CAs by two step reaction exhibited a reasonable resolution and sensitivity except for dopa, as shown in Figure 2-(C). The base peaks of OTMS, NTFA (or NHFBA) derivatives are produced at m/z 267 or 355 by benzylic cleavage to form a stable ion, as shown in Figure 3.…”

“…So far, there are several methods for determining PE in plasma, urine or tablet, such as gas chromatography (GC), 8 HPLC, 9 and GC-mass spectrometry (MS). 10 Most of these methods require a pretreatment of the separation steps and elaborate instruments.…”

“…In the preparations for the Olympic Games in 1988, a laboratory in Seoul actively developed the method of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for stimulants and narcotics 14,15 . Moreover, the abuse of beta-blockers was monitored for the first time using the improved method of gas chromatographymass spectrometry in the selected ion-monitoring regime, as well as diuretic abuse, using high-performance liquid chromatography.…”
