Determination of Perfluorochemicals in Fish and Shellfish Using Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: This paper reports the validation and application of a method for determination of 10 perfluorochemicals (PFCs) in retail fish and shellfish. The analytes of interest were 7 perfluorinated carboxylates and 3 perfluorinated sulfonates. Fish and shellfish samples were digested with a basic solution of 10 mM sodium hydroxide in methanol before sonication and solid phase extraction through weak anion exchange. Analysis was performed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Recoveries from spiking five… Show more

“…Furthermore, sensors based on electrochemical and colorimetric approach have also been described. All of the mentioned methods are time-consuming, expensive and they often require a non-easy pre-treatment step [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ]. In order to beat these drawbacks, it is needed to find a rapid, simple and sensitive method for the detection of perfluorinated alkylated substances.…”

“…The data in Table 1 were selected from among the samples with the highest PFAS levels for produce grown in an area with PFAS contaminated ground water (Food & Drug Administration, 2020a). The seafood data represent some of the highest PFAS levels FDA researchers reported in retail products sold in the U.S. markets (Young et al., 2013).…”
