Determination of pentraxin 3 levels in diagnosis of appendicitis in children

Abstract: Background: The aim of this study is to determine whether pentraxin 3 (PTX3) levels can be used in the diagnosis of appendicitis in children. Methods: Fifteen children under 18 years old, who gave blood samples for reasons other than inflammatory conditions, and 40 children who were proved to have appendicitis (non-perforated or perforated) between August 2017 and January 2018, were enrolled in the study. Patients were classified into subgroups: group 1 (healthy children without any sign of inflammation, n = 1… Show more

“…However, according to Ates et al, the cut-off value of PTX3 in the pediatrics group for those with appendicitis was 1.30 ng/mL, with a sensitivity of 75% and a specificity of 100%. Lastly, the reported positive and negative predictive values according to the ROC analysis were 100% and 60%, respectively [ 15 ].…”

“…However, the previous studies show how PTX3 with the aid of IL-6 might change that in the near future by not only diagnosing acute appendicitis but also predicting the likelihood of perforation in those individuals. One important limitation of the four studies is that they were single-center studies with different approaches [ 4 , 6 , 14 , 15 ]. Also, only two of them assessed the association of IL-6 and PTX3 with appendicitis.…”

“…The response of leukocytes to the stress is an increase in neutrophil and a decrease in lymphocyte counts. Therefore, the neutrophil / lymphocyte ratio (NLR), which has been used recently, is used as markers of systemic inflammation and oxidative stress [8,9]. NLR is an inexpensive and practical indicator that can be well detectable from a CBC [8].…”

NLR is an inexpensive and practical indicator that can be well detectable from a CBC [8]. As well as, NLR as a subclinical inflammatory indication is related to mortality and the prognosis of numerous diseases [8,[10][11][12].…”
