Determination of Oxygen Permeability in Soft Contact Lenses Using a Polarographic Method:  Estimation of Relevant Physiological Parameters

Abstract: This work reports the apparent oxygen transmissibility Dk/t) app of four silicone hydrogel (Si-Hy) contact lenses (CLs). A method is described that allows the estimation of the oxygen tension at the lens-cornea interface for closed-and open-eyelids situations combining the instrument oxygen transmissibility (IOT) and corneal parameters such as corneal thickness, corneal permeability, and oxygen flux across the cornea. From these results, the biological oxygen apparent transmissibility (BOAT), equivalent oxygen… Show more

“…A close inspection of this figure shows that the apparent permeability coefficient of Hydrogels and Si‐Hy contact lenses is function not only of water content but also of the polymer chemical structure, because the free volume cavity size determines the diffusion coefficient of penetrates, and controls the diffusion selectivity of one penetrant over another. Similar results have been obtained by other researchers . From our experimental results, the value of apparent permeability in pure water from the extrapolation of permeabilities for all the lenses ( P 0 = D 0 k m ) is 5.1 × 10 −6 cm 2 s −1 , and the value of parameter K of Eq.…”

“…It is well known that oxygen permeability through Si Hy is higher than Hy [15,50,52]. However, the transport mechanism and how this is achieved are still a matter of debate within the scientific community.…”

“…The values of time lag for oxygen diffusion through the CL displayed in the last column in Table was determined from the coefficient of oxygen diffusion through the CL given in third column and knowing the thickness of the CL (second column of Table )using the formula τl=Lnormall26Dl (see eq. (10) of reference).…”

“…The values of the apparent diffusion coefficient and permeability of the lenses given in Table I were obtained following the procedure described previously. [28][29][30][31][32][33] In brief, apparent oxygen diffusion and permeability of these CLs were determined from the measurement of electric current generated at the electrode as a consequence of the reduction process of oxygen that passed through each CL. In the steady-state conditions, apparent permeability of the lens, (P l ), is obtained from eq.…”
