Determination of Oxygen Heterocyclic Components in Citrus Products by HPLC with UV Detection

Abstract: The study of oxygen heterocyclic compounds (coumarins, psoralens, polymethoxylated flavones) in natural matrices such as citrus oils is not easy due to the difficulty of obtaining standards at the required level of purity and the diversity of structures present in each kind of sample. In this work, standards were either isolated by preparative LC methods from citrus oils or synthesized, then characterized by their physicochemical parameters and spectroscopic techniques, and further used for qualitative and qua… Show more

“…Fragmentation in the negative mode MS-MS spectrum of 12 and 13, focused on the pseudomolecular ions at 723 and 753, respectively, showed the appearance, of peaks corresponding to the loss of C 4 H 6 O 3 and C 6 (Dugo et al, 2009), depicted in Fig. 4, which was found for the first time in sour orange juice.…”

“…Studies on the nonvolatile constituents of Citrus essential oil began in the 1960s (for review, see Dugo et al, 2009), but reliable quantifications for grapefruit were not reported until much later (McHale and Sheridan, 1989;Frérot and Decorzant, 2004;Dugo et al, 2010). All of these studies used cold-pressed grapefruit oil for phytochemical and chemometric analyses.…”

“…1 Citrus products are rich sources of psoralens, a group of naturally occurring furocoumarins (furanocoumarins). [2][3][4][5] Photochemotherapy using oral psoralen (methoxsalen) and ultraviolet (UV) A radiation (PUVA) is a highly effective therapy for severe psoriasis. 6 PUVA takes advantage of the high UV absorbance of psoralen.…”
