ABSTRACT. The levels of essential and non-essential metals were determined in linseed (Linum usitatissimum) samples collected in November 2011 from five different sites (Bale, East Gojam, Shoa, South Wello and Tigray) in Ethiopia where its cultivation is common. A 0.5 g dried powdered linseed was digested with 2 mL of nitric acid (HNO3), 1 mL of perchloric acid (HClO4) and 1 mL of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at 270 o C for 2:30 hours and the levels of metals determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometer. The accuracy of the optimized procedure was evaluated by analyzing the digest of the spiked samples with standard solution. Recoveries of the spiked samples varied from 91% to 109%. The levels (mg kg -1 ) of metals determined were in the ranges Na (242-614), K (6,494-6,755), Mg (2,679-3,118), Ca (540-744), Cr (13-30), , , Ni (12-16), Cu (25-45), , and Pb (12-32). Cd was below method detection limit. K and Fe were with the highest concentration from major and trace metals, respectively. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 95% confidence level indicated that there is significant difference in the levels of all metals between the five samples means except K and Ni. The results indicated that Ethiopian linseed is a good source of essential metals and free from the toxic metal Cd but not from Pb.

ABSTRACT. The levels of essential and non-essential metals in niger seed (Guizotia abyssinica (L. f.) Cass.) cultivated in different parts of Ethiopia were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry after wet digestion using 2.5 mL of HNO3 (69.5%), 1 mL HClO4 (60%) and 0.5 mL of 30% H2O2 at 210 o C for 150 min. Sampling was carried out randomly from nine different sites from Ethiopia and one sample from Eretria for comparison. The following metal concentration ranges (μg/g) were determined in niger seed samples, respectively: Na (159-736), K (5594-8203), Ca (340-680), Mg (2404-4656), Mn (13.4-34.3), Fe (31.6-370), Cu (9.5-61.2), Zn (23.4-46.2), Cr (4.0-16.8), Co (4.9-27.3), Ni (13.0-32.4), Pb (15.5-19.3) and Cd was not detected in all the samples. The analysis of variance indicated the presence of significance difference at 95% confidence level among niger seeds collected from different sites. Pearson correlation coefficients indicated that there were significant correlations among some metals in the niger seed. The study revealed that niger seed is good source of essential metals and free from toxic metal such as Cd and hence safe for human consumption. Generally, the metal concentration in niger seed is comparable with other oil seeds.

Background: Medicinal plants are the basic raw material of various herbal formulations in folk medicine in all over the world. In recent years, regarding quality and safety of plant materials collected from different ecological conditions, there has been a growing worldwide interest in monitoring heavy metal contamination and its effect on plant growth and nutrient uptake in medicinal and aromatic plants. Objectives: In this study, profile of heavy metal and selected nutrient elements (Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Ni, P, K, Ca, S, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, B and Na) of three Sideritis species (Sideritis germanicopolitana BORNM, Sideritis galatica BORNM and Sideritis hispida P.H. DAVIS) endemic to Turkey were determined using standard analytical methods. Methods: A scanning ICP-OES (Varian Vista-Pro, Australia) with high-resolution nitrogen purged with 1 m monochromator was used. Al, Cd, Co, Ni, Cr, P, S, K, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mn, B, Zn and Na contents were determined using ICP-OES. Results: The heavy metal and nutrient element concentrations in the Sideritis species were found rather different.
