Determination of Midgap State Energy Levels of an Anatase TiO2 Nanocrystal Film by Nanosecond Transient Infrared Absorption – Excitation Energy Scanning Spectra

Abstract: Midgap levels for wide gap TiO 2 have become increasingly important because they can be used to capture solar light efficiently for photocatalysis as demonstrated by black TiO 2 in a recent paper [Chen, X., et al. Science 2011, 331 (6018), 746−750]. However, a method for systematically characterizing the midgap state energy levels is still lacking. We proposed an optical method, i.e., transient infrared (IR) absorption − excitation energy scanning spectrum, by recording nanosecond time-resolved transient IR a… Show more

“…Beyond this potential range, the semiconductor becomes unpinned, and the change of E B,TiO2 with U applied is again close to 1 eV V -1 , again shown with a black line. These results add depth to the various investigations of mid-gap states in titania films [31,32]. 14 A surface covered with metallic Ni (p + -Si/TiO 2 /Ni, Figs.…”

“…This study revealed an exponential tail of trap states extending out from the valance band edge in anatase 24 . Interestingly, optical transitions from these states into the conduction band correspond to wavelengths between 415 and 540 nm - a region of absorption typically associated with photogenerated holes in anatase 23, 25 .…”

“…The role of hydrogen in producing lattice disorder was presented in anatase TiO 2 nanoparticles, and the highly localized nature of the mid-gap states results in spatial separation of exciton in hydrogenated TiO 2 surface. It accounts for its high photocatalytic efficiency as verified by density functional theory3233. Moreover, hydrogenated TiO 2 nanoparticles exhibit the characteristics of low bandgap, which matches well with visible light absorption34353637.…”

“…The enhanced visible absorption behavior could be due to the surface defects, including the oxygen vacancy and the Ti 3+ interstitial defects. When the Ti 3+ interstitial defects which reduces Ti 4+ into Ti 3+ is on the surface, it introduces mid-gap state into TiO 2 crystal for enhanced optical absorption3348. Computer simulation is used to examine the absorption behavior caused by the oxygen vacancy.…”
