Determination of methylamine, dimethylamine, and trimethylamine in air by high-performance liquid chromatography with derivatization using 9-fluorenylmethylchloroformate

Abstract: An FMOC-based derivatization approach was developed to analyze gaseous amines by HPLC/UV. An impinger-based headspace collection and amine-derivatization system is also described.

“…Several works have been developed to improve the analytical techniques such as using sorptive media, solid phase microextraction (SPME), preconcentration by applying derivatization reagents, thermal desorption (TD) coupled with GC--time of flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) Iqbal et al, 2014;Kim et al, 2002;Kim et al, 2013), in order to enhance the precision, detector sensitivity for TMA analysis in environmental samples with very low concentrations. collected after 4 hours to be analyzed by GC/FID.…”

“…14 An orthogonal strategy to reduce the potential activity of amines, as well as improve their detection sensitivity is by chemical derivatization of the analytes. 15,16 Coupling derivatization chemistry to chromatographic systems with sensitive MS detection can improve the quantification of amines to trace/ultra-trace levels. 17–19…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports on the determination of N-nitrosamines using Fmoc-Cl. However, there are a few reports on the determination of DMA, which is a product of the denitrosation of NDMA [17][18][19][20]. The aim of our research is to develop a reproducible analytical method that would provide an appropriate LOQ, as required by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), and would not require expensive and sophisticated equipment, such as GC-MS and LC-MS. For this purpose, the most popular reagent for the derivatisation of N-nitrosamines, dansyl chloride and the first used for this purpose, Fmoc-Cl, were selected.…”
