Determination of methane in ambient air by multiplex gas chromatography

Abstract: A multiplex gas chromatographic technique for the determination of methane in ambient air over extended periods is reported. A modest gas chromatograph which uses air as the carrier gas was modified by adding a silver oxide sample modulator for multiplex operation. The modulator selectively catalyzes the decomposition of methane in air. The resulting analytical systems requires no consumables beyond power. A profile of the methane concentration in this laboratory was obtained for an 8-day period. During t… Show more

“…Deposition of thicker layers of metal was a step in the wrong direction because the time required for cool down became excessive. Problems with the attachment of electrical leads were particularly difficult to solve [2,167]. The fragile components produced irreproducible heating characteristics and frequently burned out.…”

“…The cause for this is that when the valve is rotated to inject a new sample, methane present in ambient air that leak sinto the valve adds to the amount already present in the sample. Methane has already been reported to be present in this laboratory at approximately 3 ppm [13]. Even though the valve was covered with a helium bag, the amount of added methane is enough to cause variations in the amount of methane being introduced into the GC.…”

“…As a simple example of this kind of action may serve an application of thermal pulse to the adsorbent. This idea is implemented by chemical modulation input systems [23]. The idea can be developed even further by imaging input systems where the sample is introduced into the column by modulating between two sample flows: one with the class of impurities of interest and the other without them.…”
