This study attempts to investigate the geotechnical properties of subsoils in an active Dumpsite (DS) within the basement complex area of Abeokuta, Nigeria with a view to assess its suitability as a foundation/filling material. Sixteen (16) composite soil samples were collected from four different parts of the DS at varied depths of 0.0 - 0.5, 0.5 - 1.0, 1.0 - 1.5, and 1.5 - 2.0 m. The soil properties considered are particle size distribution, Specific Gravity (SG), permeability, Shear Strength (SS), Maximum Dry Density (MDD), Optimum Moisture Content (OMC), Natural Moisture Content (NMC) and Atterberg limit (AL) indices. Results show that the assessed soil samples are sandy soils with less than 30% clay content. The ALs test revealed that analysed samples had low Plasticity index (PI) (0.20 - 11.96%), low values of Plastic Limit (PL) and Liquid Limit (LL) of (14.19 - 18.83% and 17.52 - 26.15%, respectively). The MDD values ranged from 1.07 to 1.76 g/cm3 while the NMC and OMC were <25% and <18%, respectively. The permeability coefficients ranged from 1.53 x 10−4 to 8.49 x 10−3 cm/s, indicating moderately permeable soil while the SS results (ranging from 3.4 to 12.5 KPa) indicate low cohesive capacity soils. The tested soils are mildly suitable for foundation/filling materials. Further study is needed to study the trend of alteration of soil properties with depth on dumpsite soil located on other geological formations.

The present study assessed the pollution, ecological, and health risks of heavy metals (HMs) in remediated soils by compost fortified with natural coagulants (Moringa, Neem, and Pawpaw).The polluted soils were mixed with the stabilized composts at varying ratios of 1:200, 1:100, 1:66, and 1:50. Heavy metals(Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn, Cd, and Pb) were determined in compost and soil samples using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. Data collected were analyzed for descriptive and inferential statistics. Removal efficiencies (REs) of HMs by the compost types were also determined. Results showed Mn as the highest observed HM in composts with values ranging from 179.6 ± 1.25 mg kg− 1 in Neem to 206.3 ± 5.01 mg kg− 1 in Moringa. The levels of HMs (except Zn) observed in composts were generally less than the target values expected in unpolluted soil. Application of the three composts to contaminated soils reduced the HMs by 5–37, 17–47, 25–43, 43–57,59–71, and 69–75% for Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Mn, and Zn, respectively. Removal of HMs in contaminated soils followed the distribution pattern of Zn > Mn > Pb > Cu > Ni > Cd. All the compost types were effective in cleaning up Mn and Zn in contaminated soils. However, Moringa appeared to indicate the highest removal efficiency followed by Neem and Pawpaw, in that order.

Investigation of the subsurface becomes a compulsion before waste disposal site is developed. The content of this paper presents integrated geophysical methods in a basement complex terrain, southwestern Nigeria. The dumpsite is located at Oke Saje, Abeokuta, in Ogun state. This was done to investigate the leachate curtailment capacity (LCC) of the existing dumpsite by characterizing the subsurface. A clay overburden thickness of about 15 m which acts as leachate filter is a standard for determining the LCC of a dumpsite. Prior to this work, there is no documented record that such investigation had been done to reveal the LCC before establishment of the dumpsite. Vertical electrical sounding (VES), 2D electrical resistivity tomography (2D-ERT) and multi-channel analysis of surface waves techniques were adopted for the investigation on the existing dumpsite. Eighteen VES was carried out using Schlumberger configuration at 5-10-m intervals to obtain resistivity values and the respective lithological units of the subsurface and three electrical resistivity imaging using dipole-dipole array. MASW techniques were later carried out to ascertain the underlain materials by determining seismic wave arrival times which were processed to obtain the shear wave velocities (SWVs) of the subsurface. The 2D-ERT revealed clearer features of the subsurface as topsoil, weathered, fractured and fresh basement. The result of the VES revealed topsoil with resistivity values ranging from 18 to 1381 Ωm, weathered layer (clay) with resistivity values 15-84 Ωm, fresh basement and fractured layer with resistivity values 192/366-5585 Ωm. The thickness of the clay deposition ranges from 1.8 to 18.5 m. The MASW result using SWVs revealed topsoil, sandy clay, clayey sand and clay with rigidity modulus ranging between 42.4 and 160 N/m 2 at the depth of 30 m. The combined methods carried out at the dumpsites revealed the same lithological units. The waste disposal site is said to have a good LCC due to the presence of clay overburden thickness but not up to 15 m in some parts of the dumpsite.
