Determination of Heavy Metal in Agricultural Soils near and Far From the Cement Factory in Tehran, Iran

Abstract: Background: Heavy metals (HMs) are one of the most important polluting substances emitted to the environment during cement production. Tehran Cement Factory located in the southeastern of Tehran, Iran, closer to agricultural lands cultivates alfalfa, barley, and maize as feed. The objective of the study was to determine the concentration of HMs in agricultural soils. Methods: Thirty six soil samples were collected from two regions of Aminabad (close to the cement factory) and Varamin (far from cement factory) i… Show more

“…4 depicts concentration of copper accumulated by the roots of P. australis. The development of some new industries in the case study had a meaningful role in increasing of heavy metals as well documented already [18]. The heavy metal pollution was reported in aquatic ecosystems in Iran especially in lentic freshwater ecosystems like wetland [19], so to preserve the environment of the pollution is seriously recommended.…”

“…It helps in evaluating soil fertility and nutrient management practices [44]. Determination of heavy metal concentrations in soils: AAS is widely used to determine the concentrations of heavy metals in soil samples, such as lead, copper, and zinc, which can have harmful effects on the environment and human health [23], [45], [46]. Many studies have been conducted on analyzing heavy metals in agricultural soils using the AAS analytical technique, from old to advanced.…”

“…Microbial pollution: Soil can become contaminated with pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites from agricultural activities, which can pose a risk to human and animal health [21], [22]. Heavy metals are a type of environmental pollutant that can enter the environment through various industrial and agricultural activities such as the disposal of solid waste, application of fertilizers and pesticides, irrigation with wastewater, and the release of urban and industrial wastes and automobile exhausts [1], [4], [23]- [26]. These heavy metals are naturally occurring elements in the earth's crust and are persistent, remaining in aqueous and terrestrial environments for extended periods [12], [27].…”
