Determination of formaldehyde in air by ion-exclusion and ion-exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection

Abstract: A method is presented for the determination of formaldehyde in air sample extracts containing aqueous sodium hydrogensulfite. Utilizing the unique properties of its hydrogensulfite complex, formaldehyde is separated from other sample components by ion-exclusion and ion-exchange chromatography, then selectively detected by amperometry at a silver electrode. Optimum sensitivity of detection was found to occur at +0.10 V versus a silver wire reference electrode using a strongly basic background electrolyte. Using… Show more

“…The data of Table suggest that such an adsorption effect does not affect the collection efficiency significantly down to formaldehyde concentrations of 16 ppb v/v in air. However, at much lower concentrations, it will be necessary to verify that there is no decrease in the measured collection efficiency as we approach the estimated detection limit of about 1 ppb v/v with the chromotropic acid method or whatever other limit may apply with an alternative measuring method, such as those of refs , , or 23.…”

“…Various analytical methods have been reported to determine formaldehyde in vapors [1,2] or especially in liquid phase [3][4][5]. Amperometric sensors in potentiostatic mode using noble metal as electrodes deposited on Nafion membranes are widely reported [6][7][8].…”

“…Potenciometricamente, vários analitos foram quantificados, dentre os quais, haletos [11][12][13][14] , cianeto 15 , vitamina C e glutationa 16 . Amperometricamente, cianeto, sulfeto, iodeto, brometo e formaldeído foram analisados por diferentes autores [17][18][19] . Por voltametria, sulfato 20 , zinco 21 , nitrato 22 e DNA 23 também foram quantificados utilizando eletrodos de prata.…”
