Determination of filtration characteristics due to sudden reduction in filtration area of filter cake surface.

Abstract: To obtain accurate values of filtration characteristics as the ratio mof wet to dry cake massand the average specific filtration resistance aav, constant-pressure filtration experiments were conducted using a filter having a hole at the top of the filter chamber. The relation between the cake thickness L and the filtrate volume v per unit medium area, which serves as a basis of the determination of m and aav, can be obtained on the basis of the principle of sudden reduction in the filtration area of the cake s… Show more

“…The insert plate has a raised cylindrical portion surrounding the orifice opening such that when the insert plate is in place, the distributor portion of the upper piston is closed off; thus, restricting the flow of the test suspension through the orifice only. This design was made following the work of Murase et al 28 and detailed features of the test cell are shown in Figure 2. More complete descriptions of the cell can be found elsewhere, 29 -31 and will not be repeated here.…”

“…As stated before, the method used for determining the cake thickness vs. time was based on the method first proposed by Murase et al 28 For each filtration experiment, the upper piston of the test cell was placed at a particular position. The test suspension entered into the cell through the inlet opening of the piston.…”

“…A method has been developed for evaluating rigorously the properties of the filter cake, such as the average porosity ε av and the average specific filtration resistance α av [8]. It utilizes the sudden reduction in filtration area of the cake surface.…”
