We measured prokaryotic production and respiration in the major water masses of the North Atlantic down to a depth of ,4,000 m by following the progression of the two branches of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) in the oceanic conveyor belt. Prokaryotic abundance decreased exponentially with depth from 3 to 0.4 3 10 5 cells mL 21 in the eastern basin and from 3.6 to 0.3 3 10 5 cells mL 21 in the western basin. Prokaryotic production measured via 3 H-leucine incorporation showed a similar pattern to that of prokaryotic abundance and decreased with depth from 9.2 to 1.1 mmol C m 23 d 21 in the eastern and from 20.6 to 1.2 mmol C m 23 d 21 in the western basin. Prokaryotic respiration, measured via oxygen consumption, ranged from about 300 to 60 mmol C m 23 d 21 from ,100 m depth to the NADW. Prokaryotic growth efficiencies of ,2% in the deep waters (depth range 1,200-4,000 m) indicate that the prokaryotic carbon demand exceeds dissolved organic matter input and surface primary production by 2 orders of magnitude. Cell-specific prokaryotic production was rather constant throughout the water column, ranging from 15 to 32 3 10 23 fmol C cell 21 d 21 in the eastern and from 35 to 58 3 10 23 fmol C cell 21 d 21 in the western basin. Along with increasing cell-specific respiration towards the deep water masses and the relatively short turnover time of the prokaryotic community in the dark ocean (34-54 d), prokaryotic activity in the meso-and bathypelagic North Atlantic might be higher than previously assumed.

Estimates of gross primary production (GPP) based on fast repetition rate fluorometer (FRRF) measurements were compared with independent 14 C and O 2 at three stations during a spring bloom in the North Atlantic. A photosynthesis versus irradiance (P-E) curve was constructed for each station from the observations of in situ photon efficiency of photosynthesis. This composite P-E curve was compared with P-E curves determined for discrete samples from 14 C assimilation. Estimates of ␣ Chl and P m Chl from the 14 C-uptake method were 1.5-2.5-fold lower than those estimated from the FRRF data. Much of this discrepancy can be accounted for if 14 C assimilation approximates net phytoplankton photosynthesis with use of a photosynthetic quotient of 1.4 mol O 2 (mol CO 2 )Ϫ1 . Photosynthetic oxygen consumption may have also contributed to the difference. In situ GPP was calculated from incident irradiance, light attenuation, light absorption by phytoplankton, and the light dependence of the in situ photon efficiency. This estimate of GPP was two times greater than net community photosynthesis determined from diel changes of in situ oxygen concentration. Thus, the in situ net O 2 and in vitro 14 C techniques yielded similar estimates of phytoplankton photosynthesis that were about twofold lower than the estimates of GPP provided by FRRF. Uncertainties in the FRRF technique associated with choosing an appropriate value of photosynthetic unit size and fitting a P-E curve to the in situ measurements are discussed. Despite these uncertainties, the FRRF results were consistent with the independent estimates of phytoplankton productivity.

The influence of episodic flooding on a pelagic ecosystem in the East China Sea

Abstract. This study was designed to determine the effects of flooding on a pelagic ecosystem in the East China Sea (ECS) with a focus on plankton activity and plankton community respiration (CR). In July 2010, a flood occurred in the Changjiang River. As a comparison, a variety of abiotic and biotic parameters were monitored during this flooding event and during a non-flooding period (July 2009). During the flood, the Changjiang diluted water (CDW) zone covered almost two-thirds of the ECS, which was approximately 6 times the area covered during the non-flooding period. The mean nitrate concentration was 3-fold higher during the 2010 flood (6.2 vs. 2.0 µM in 2009). CR was also higher in the 2010 flood: 105.6 mg C m −3 d −1 vs. only 73.2 mg C m −3 d −1 in 2009. The higher CR in 2010 could be attributed to phytoplankton respiration, especially at stations in the CDW zone that were not previously characterized by low sea surface salinity in 2009. In addition, zooplankton (> 330 µm) were another important component contributing to the high CR rate observed during the 2010 flood; this was a period also associated with a significant degree of f CO 2 drawdown. These results collectively suggest that the 2010 flood had a significant effect on the carbon balance in the ECS. This effect might become more pronounced in the future, as extreme rainfall and flooding events are predicted to increase in both frequency and magnitude due to climate change.
