“…1 Most of these tests are relatively low fission yield, mainly causing a higher regional deposition by directly releasing radioactive plumes to local and downwind regions. 1,31 The deposited 129 I in the close-in area of the STS might also be resuspended into the air due to the arid and semiarid climate in this region and consequently dispersed and deposited in Northern Xinjiang. 5 The STS-originated 137 Cs deposition of (2.1−2.5) kBq/m 2 in 1995 (4.2−7.2 kBq/m 2 decay corrected to 1963) has been reported in the Russian Altay region, 28,32 which is 400−600 km east of the STS, a similar direction and distance as Northern Xinjiang to the STS.…”

“…It was reported that more than 50% of the radioactive plume from the STS dispersed eastward. 31 The regional deposition of 129 I from the STS in Northern Xinjiang is estimated to be (1.7−2.0) × 10 12 atoms/ m 2 based on the fission yields of 129 I and 137 Cs. Using this value as the representative STS-derived 129 I deposition, the contribution of regional deposition of the STS in Northern Xinjiang can be estimated to be 1−7% based on the measured total 129 I inventory of (3.04−20.4) × 10 13 atoms/m 2 , i.e., less than 10%.…”
