Determination of critical moisture content in porous materials by IR thermography

Abstract: This study is focused on the improvement on the porous material characterisation, measuring the transition stage between the saturated and dry phases, which has been defined in literature as the critical moisture content (Θc). This study develops a procedure based on Quantitative IR Thermography (QIRT) determining the effective Θ c , as a physical property for the porous material. The Θc for San Marco bricks were examined in laboratory by QIRT and the standard gravimetric method (SGM). It was seen that QIRT ca… Show more

“…Quantitative IR Thermography (QIRT) can be used for the determination of critical moisture content (Θ c ) level for porous materials [14,15]. The weathering conditions, such as the cycles of freezing-thawing, wetting-drying and salt crystallization, are more damaging for wet porous materials when the moisture content is above the critical moisture content (Θ c ) [23,24].…”

“…A procedure based on QIRT was developed for precisely-analysing the transition stage between the saturated and dry phases of a porous material in order to determine its effective Θ c , as a physical property [14]. The Θ c level for some building materials, such as repair brick and tuffs, were examined in laboratory by QIRT and the Standard Gravimetric Method (SGM).…”

“…Furthermore, the content of moisture of the solid surface can be estimated exploiting peculiarities of porous materials adsorption-desorption isotherms (Camuffo, 2001). The evaporation rate is evaluated, by means of thermographic detections of temperature differences of surface area with different moisture content (Tavukçuoglu and Grinzato, 2006), but taking into account the air temperature, as well.…”
